Tips for being a healthcare advocate

Insights

Advocating for yourself or your loved ones when faced with healthcare situations can help ensure the best outcomes. But it isn’t easy. The healthcare system is complex, filled with confusing terminology and scientific concepts. When emotions are high surrounding loved ones’ well-being, you can become lost and overwhelmed with decisions. That’s why advocacy is an important skill to practice.

Here are 5 tips from Wellthy care experts to help you and your family exercise advocacy in the healthcare system.

Educate yourself

Learn about the condition, tests, and treatment options. Understanding key details will make you a more informed patient and better able to ask questions and evaluate care recommendations from your providers.

Take notes

Keep a running log of symptoms, medications, test results, doctor recommendations, and any questions or concerns you may have. Detailed documentation will help you remember key points and have accurate information to share across healthcare visits.

Bring another advocate with you

Whether it’s your spouse, parent, friend or an advocate service, having support at appointments provides a second pair of ears and memory to absorb information. Discuss beforehand what role this person should play.

Ask questions

Don’t be afraid to ask for explanations if you don’t understand something your doctor said. Ask about rationale for treatment plans, possible side effects of medications, or results from tests or procedures.

Provide feedback

If you feel care has fallen short, thoughtfully explain concerns and provide examples via phone, letter, or follow-up appointment. Seek solutions rather than blame, focusing the conversation on improving your care experience.
